Blood Examination

Sometime during early pregnancy, the woman should have a series of blood tests. This test include hemoglobin and red-cell counts to detect anemia, a white cell count to reveal or rule out infection or other disorders, and a blood test for syphilis, required by law. In addition, an Rh hemolytic disease (erythroblastosis fetalis), a genetically determined blood disorder. In most cases, both mother and father have a substance known as Rh factor in their red blood cells. If the mother lack this substance and the baby inherits the factor from the father, the mother’s blood could react against the baby’s. The first pregnancy is usually not affected, but subsequent babies are at risk. Today for mother with Rh disease can be immunized against this problem.
